About this masterclass

It’s your budget now. Can you read it?

Somewhere along the way you were handed a cost centre. Nobody checked whether you could read a balance sheet. Now you approve spend, build next year’s numbers and sit in meetings where finance talks about accruals, margins and cash flow as if everyone speaks the language.

Most managers get by. They nod through the budget meeting, roll last year’s figures forward with a few per cent added, and hope nobody asks why the forecast moved. That works until the business case gets knocked back, the overspend lands on your name, or the CFO asks a question you can’t answer.

This one-day masterclass closes that gap. Lindsay Dewberry has spent more than 25 years teaching managers to read financial statements, build a budget that holds up and make the case for spending money. You’ll work through real statements and a case study, not theory, and leave able to talk to finance as an equal.

No finance background needed. Every exercise runs on supplied case-study material, so no company documents or confidential figures are required. Work in government? Finance for Non-Finance Managers in Government runs the next day.

CPD points

6 hrs for the day

Members of CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants ANZ and the Governance Institute of Australia may claim it as verifiable or structured CPD. Every delegate receives a certificate of attendance.

Masterclass agenda

What the day covers

For managers who hold a budget but don’t come from a finance background. No accounting knowledge assumed.

8:30 Log-in · 9:00 Start · 5:00 Close (Sydney time)
1Reading the Three Financial StatementsThe language finance uses, and what each statement is really telling you.
  • The language of finance: revenue vs cash, profit vs margin, assets vs expenses
  • The income statement: the layers of profit (gross, operating, net) and what each one tells you
  • The balance sheet: assets, liabilities and equity, and why current vs non-current matters
  • The cash flow statement: operating, investing and financing cash flows
  • Why a profitable business can still run out of cash
Exercise: Read a real set of annual statements and explain, in plain English, how the year went.
2Analysing Performance: What the Numbers Are Telling YouSpotting a problem before it shows up in a report.
  • Vertical analysis and reading trends across years
  • Performance ratios: margins and return on assets
  • Liquidity ratios: can the business pay its bills?
  • Leverage ratios: how much of it is funded by debt?
  • Reading ratios as a story, not a scorecard
Exercise: Ratio case study. Diagnose a business in trouble from its numbers alone.
3Building and Managing Your BudgetBudgets built from how costs actually behave, not last year plus inflation.
  • Where the budget sits in the planning cycle
  • How costs behave: fixed, variable and step costs
  • Building revenue and expense budgets from drivers, not last year plus inflation
  • Forecasting and reforecasting through the year
  • Monitoring and control: explaining a variance before you’re asked
Exercise: Build a department budget from its cost drivers, then explain a mid-year variance.
4Business Cases and Capital InvestmentMaking the case for spending money, and defending it in the room.
  • Capital vs operating expenditure, and why the treatment matters
  • Payback period
  • The time value of money: discounted cash flow, net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR)
  • Hurdle rates, cost of capital and required rates of return
  • Building a business case that survives the finance team
Exercise: Assess two competing investment proposals and recommend one.
